Battlefield 2142

Team warfare…in the future. The Next in the Battlefield line takes place in 2142, with an arsenal of destructive next generation weaponry to blast your foes back to the 21st century. Though, Battlefield 2142 meets the same shortcomings of all the other in the series, a great concept with no actual functionality.

Working much the same way as Battlefield 2 with a commander and squads and adds futuristic twist. Instead of holding strategic points to collect “flags,” in 2142 you hold Missile Silos that slowly blast away the enemies Titan, a massive transport ship that hovers at either end of the map. When the shields fall, its time to blast away at the Titan’s core from inside.

2142 tries desperately to get teams working as, well a team. Unless you know a good server, or are in a clan, most likely the game will be much like those before it. No one waiting for passengers, and those that do cannot fly! Perhaps someday the populace of Battlefield 2142 will actually realize others are playing the game, and maybe they objective would be furthered with a small amount of team work, or maybe not. Hasn’t happened yet, so it don’t look good.

The sound effects have been slightly upgraded, though it sounds like they merely put a pin on all the Battlefield 2 sfx, and called it the future. The music sounds exactly the same and might as well not be there at all. With all the time the time used on those mechs, they could have spent a little on new explosion effects, or maybe keeping the hover ships form sounding like helicopters.

The graphics are no better or worse then BF2, they are actually exactly the same. The look of the game may have changed, but the BF2 engine is still obviously running it. Turning the graphics to high appeared to do no more then make the game load slower, for no significant difference was seen at all.

For fans of the rest of the series, the game runs exactly like BF2, in every way. No new controls, though a few nice news ways to use them helped to make it feel slightly better than an expansion pack.

The work they did on this game does look good, but appears to be nothing more than commercial mod. In all accounts, an independent mod team might have even done a better job.
